Part vaudeville, part physical comedy, and all fast-paced entertainment, The Wiyos bring their unique performance of Jug Band and Old-Time music to two January 24, 2009 performances at York's Martin Library, 159 E. Market Street, York, PA, at 11AM and 1PM. The concerts are sponsored by Susquehanna Folk in collaboration with Martin Library.
Playing washboard, kazoo, harmonica, resonator guitar, banjo, and upright bass, and joining their voices in four-part harmony, The Wiyos transport audiences to an earlier, simpler time in America when there was no TV or mass media for entertainment. Their sound reminds us of the bygone days when live bands were heard on the radio and at community dances, juke joints and house parties. Their infectious exuberance and theatrical skills create a visual spectacle in the tradition of vaudeville-style performers such as Fats Waller, the Hoosier Hotshots, and Uncle Dave Macon. And their physical comedy recalls the silent films of Laurel and Hardy, Buster Keaton, and Charlie Chaplin.
In the five years of their existence, The Wiyos have approached their calling with a passion -- driving more than 400,000 miles in seven countries and playing more than 1,000 shows. They also have released three albums, blending their own original works with a wide spectrum of iconic American music that transcends the genres of blues, country, ragtime, gospel, swing, and hillbilly.
The Wiyos took their name from the toughest gang (Whyos) that prowled the streets of New York in the 1890s. But they have come to appeal to everyone, from hipsters to seasoned music connoisseurs, from children to bikers. With reviewers praising their musicianship and Sing Out! saying they are "tons of fun," a Wiyos performance is not to be missed. They're online at www.TheWiyos.com
