A part of our Martin Library series, presented in cooperation with Martin Library.
"A story is an ephemeral thing that only truly exists at the moment of its telling... it comes from the teller alive and has a fresh life with each telling."
Beating on his talking drum, Temujin Ekùnféo (Temujin the Storyteller) will gather the crowd at Martin Library, as it is done in African villages, for a spellbinding hour of traditional stories from Africa and the Americas.
Temujin's stories range from traditional Yoruba (the Nigerian culture of his ancesters) to Native American tales. He will only tell stories he likes, and never tells a story the same way twice. Some of his favorite West African stories are about Anansi the Spider and Rabbit -- two tricky characters who rely on their wits but often get themselves into trouble -- and the wise tortoise who goes through life calmly, refusing to be rushed. These characters have found their way into American culture, becoming classics such as "The Tortoise and the Hare" and the Br'er Rabbit stories.
Temujin has been telling stories for over 40 years, and has an active repertoire of over 200 fables, tales, and parables. Onstage he wears the traditional garb of a West African prince from the Renaissance period, with elaborately hand-woven embroidered silk cloth and jewelry made of glass, brass, bronze and hippopotamus ivory. He performs about 150 times a year at festivals, schools, libraries and at Renaissance fairs. We're excited to have him come to York.
"Temujin is my friend and I want you all to stay so that you can hear his wonderful stories." -- Fred Rogers
