Chinese Watercolor

Learn about the ancient art of Chinese watercolor with artist Diana Meng. Using a Chinese brush, inkstone and paper, learn basic techniques to create a simple painting in the traditional style. Ms. Meng will also give a slide-show presentation. Participants will leave with a bookmark with their name written on it in Chinese characters. This workshop is for adults and youths age 10 and older.

Chinese painting is a centuries-old art form using traditional materials and techniques to tell a story or express the vision of the artist. An important part of Chinese culture, it is taught to schoolchildren in China and Taiwan. It is considered not only a painting lesson, but also a good mind training process. Patience and preparation are part of the foundation: students can spend years perfecting just one of the four basic brush patterns.

"It's not just for decoration," explains Ms. Meng. "To me, painting is like the Chinese saying 'shã shing yun sen', which enables you to maintain good health and inner peace by quieting your heart."

Diana Meng was born in Mainland China and grew up in Taiwan. She began learning Chinese painting during middle school. She and her husband Peter moved to Harrisburg over 35 years ago. Recently retired from Capital Blue Cross, she teaches watercolor, calligraphy and Chinese language at the Chinese Cultural and Arts Institute in Harrisburg, PA. She especially enjoys teaching children and teenagers, who gain a better understanding of Chinese culture and heritage through this ancient art form and the customs surrounding it.
