Tin Kettle

Tin Kettle

A Lancaster-based trio specializing in the dance music and songs of Ireland, played on fiddle, tenor banjo, guitar, concertina, tin whistle, five-string banjo, and mandolin. Tin Kettle features the vocals of Matthew Ward, a regular performer for Philadelphia Ceili Group activities; his extensive store of material includes songs by some of Ireland's finest contemporary songwriters as well as songs from the deep tradition. John Winship and Sharon Sacks, aside from their Irish playing, have long experience with American Appalachian music: Sharon currently plays banjo with Ladies in the Parlor, and John played for many years in the West Orrtanna String Band and the Orrtanna Mountain Steamers. You can hear this southern mountain influence in some of Tin Kettle's arrangements.

  • As Useful as a Small Pot (2007) Fourteen tunes ranging from a polka medley to "St Patrick's Lamentation" to a cotillion mixer. Great fun!
The Contra Rebels

The Contra Rebels

The "Contra Rebels" are a high energy contra and square dance band playing old-time, New England, French Canadian, and Celtic tunes with great rhythm and drive. Todd Clewell on fiddle and Henry Koretzky on guitar are the core of the group and often play as a duo.

  • Down the River (2007) These 11 contra tunes are played by Clewell and Koretzky, joined by banjoist Glenn Carson, fiddler Barb Schmid, and bassist Bruce Campbell. The dance-friendly arrangements include southern-style old-time tunes, jigs, northern tunes, polkas, and more.
Rootbound: Deb Kauffman & Henry Koretzky

Rootbound

Singer/guitarist Deb Kauffmann and mandolinist/guitarist/singer Henry Koretzky infuse the classic Appalachian/bluegrass repertoire with new material drawn from contemporary songwriters. Rootbound is a duo that takes the traditional sounds of Appalachian old-time, bluegrass, and early country music and brings them into the present. Paying loving tribute to the duet sounds of such seminal groups as the Louvin Brothers and the Stanley Brothers and the wide-ranging repertoire of the Carter Family.

  • Rootbound (2004) The duo's eponymous CD features 15 songs with timeless emotional connections and tight, soulful harmonies. The artists carry on the old-time tradition in a distinctive new-time/old-time mix of love songs, ballads, and original compositions. These are interspersed with hard-driving fiddle tunes, ageless songs like Lily May Ledford's "Banjo Picking Girl," and innovative covers such as "Dark End of the Street" arranged as a Louvin-style waltz.
