Enjoy a solid day of jazz, swing, and Lindy Hop dancing with three internationally recognized instructors and our good friends at Lindy Central.
The Lindy Hop is a dance created by Black Americans and African-Americans in the ballrooms of Harlem, NY in the early 1900s. It was a response not only to the jazz tunes of the times, but also to the events of the times: systemic racism, challenging living conditions, The Great Depression. The Lindy Hop spread through the nation and the world and continues to do so. It is dance that values improvisation, self-expression, innovation, and community as well. Learn more at LindyCentral.com
Enjoy the rare opportunity to learn from a swing dance legend! Crystal Johnson is a Harvest Moon Ball winner from 1972 and a former member of the Mama Lu Parks Dance troupe. She will be instructing alongside Bobby White, an internationally recognized swing dance instructor from New York City.
Crystal and Bobby will teach a two-hour swing dance class for all levels spanning the noon hour on Saturday. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing for a fast-paced and high-energy class with two amazing instructors, and really get a taste for what it is like to dance jazz, swing, and Lindy Hop.
From 1pm to 4pm, the stellar NYC band The Revisionists brings the spirit of the Savoy Ballroom to the festival for three hours of high spirited, hard swingin' social dancing.
During the band's first break, LindyCentral's Carla Crowen will teach a short "taster" lesson for beginners. Carla (née Heiney) is a world champion dancer with several prestigious competition titles, and is the leader of the SugarSnaps dance troupe.
After the dance, join local string wizard Henry Koretzky at the Pickin' Place for A Survey of Swing. Henry will describe what swing and jazz are (including subgenres like western swing and gypsy jazz), and demonstrate chords, melodies, harmonies and improv that make tunes swing. Instruments are optional but welcome.
To wrap up this Saturday of swing, head over to the Coffeehouse Stage for a fascinating Question & Answer session with our honored guests, Crystal and Bobby. They'll discuss all aspects of Lindy Hop, from its Harlem origins to its current revival. Come prepared with questions so you can really feel a part of the community.
Come back to the Festival on Sunday afternoon to catch The Revisionists on our Main Stage. They have "a classic swing sound you wouldn't think possible."
