With a repertoire that spans over a hundred years of early American popular music, Dom Flemons calls himself “The American Songster.” ® SFMS audiences have loved his stellar musicianship on multiple instruments, his personable stage presence, and the depth of knowledge he shares about the Black American experience through music.

In addition to being a GRAMMY Award Winner and two-time EMMY nominee, Flemons is a 2020 US Artists Fellow: a recipient of the prestigious United States Artists Fellowship Award for the Traditional Arts category.

He is an expert player on the banjo, guitar, harmonica, jug, percussion, quills, fife and rhythm bones. He is also a songwriter, producer, actor, slam poet, music scholar, historian and record collector. Flemons' career includes numerous honors and unique experiences in addition to his tours and recordings, and no brief description can do it justice.

His 2018 solo album Dom Flemons Presents Black Cowboys (Smithsonian Folkways) received a GRAMMY Nomination for “Best Folk Album” and spent over 55 weeks on the BILLBOARD Bluegrass Charts, peaking at #4. Flemons was nominated for “Artist of The Year” at the International Folk Music Awards, “Best Acoustic Album” at the Blues Music Awards, and “Best Folk Album” at the Liberia Awards. He won a Wammie Awards for “Best Folk Album”, won a Living Blues Award for “New Recordings/ Traditional & Acoustic album”, and received the ASCAP Foundation Paul Williams “Loved the Liner Notes” Award.

SFMS first met Dom Flemons in 2008 when we hosted the Carolina Chocolate Drops, a traditional Black American stringband which he co-founded. Among other honors, that critically-acclaimed band went on to win a 2010 GRAMMY and a 2012 GRAMMY nomination, and is featured in the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. We've hosted Flemons twice since he embarked on his solo career, including a headline billing at our 2019 Susquehanna Folk Festival.
