Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas

Part of our 2024 Susquehanna Folk Festival

Sunday, August 13, 2023 7:30 pm Concert at The Englewood
Fiddle Camp 1:30 - 4:30 pm, followed by an open Celtic Session

About This Event:

This brilliant duo blends profound understanding of Scottish traditional music with cutting-edge string exploration, intimate chamber music with ecstatic dance energy, and place the cello at the rhythmic heart of it all. Alasdair Fraser has been called "the Michael Jordan of Scottish fiddling", and one could say that’s no less true for cellist Natalie Haas.

PLUS an afternoon "Fiddle Camp"

Spend an afternoon with these two incomparable musicians. The theme is "Finding Your Voice." Nobody can be better at being “you” than you can! Learn how to speak on your instrument in an idiomatic way using vernacular language and dialects to explore regional styles from Scotland and beyond. We take a primarily Scottish approach, but the same message can be applied to all cultures and people.

AND an open Celtic Session

Bring your instrument (or your listening ears) and come make some music! We'll be focusing on tunes from Scotland, Ireland, Cape Breton, and elsewhere in the Celtic lands. Everyone is welcome!

...in addition to their Concert

Alasdair and Natalie have truly set the standard for fiddle and cello in traditional music. They thrill audiences internationally with their virtuosic playing, their near-telepathic understanding and the joyful spontaneity and sheer physical presence of their music.

Fraser has a concert and recording career spanning over 30 years, with a long list of awards, accolades, radio and television credits, and feature performances on top movie soundtracks (Last of the Mohicans, Titanic, etc.). In 2011, he was inducted into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame.

Haas, a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, is one of the most sought after cellists in traditional music today. She has performed and recorded with a who's who of the fiddle world including Mark O'Connor, Natalie MacMaster, Irish supergroups Solas and Altan, Liz Carroll, Dirk Powell, Brittany Haas, Darol Anger, Jeremy Kittel, Hanneke Cassel, Laura Cortese, and many more.

The duo's debut recording, Fire & Grace, won the coveted the Scots Trad Music "Album of the Year" award, the Scottish equivalent of a Grammy. The two have gone on to record five more critically acclaimed albums that blend a profound understanding of the Scottish tradition with cutting-edge string explorations. In additional to performing, they both have motivated generations of string players through their teaching at fiddle camps across the globe.
