Anytime! - Jewish Musical Traditions: a Virtual Residency

In a full-day artists' residency on December 6, we explored Klezmer, the mesmerizing musical tradition of the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe. Five groundbreaking female Klezmer musicians from around the country participated.

JMT Session 4 - Whose Song is This?

A whirlwind exploration of song migration — how the tangled roots of songs lead to the widest variety of musical expression over time, geography, and even political boundaries! Finale performances by all five musicians capped a great day of musical exploration. Watch it on YouTube. MORE

Anytime! - Fall Coffee House

Anytime! - Storyteller Bil Lepp

On Sunday, October 4 we enjoyed an afternoon of truth-stretching, shaggy dogs and outright whoppers with champion storyteller Bil Lepp. In a Virtual Storytelling Workshop we learned how chaos is created (it doesn't happen on its own!) and then we watched him do it himself in a livestream performance. Anytime! - Irish Sessions with Seamus Carmichael

The most authentic Irish music isn't on a recording or on a concert stage — it's a group of folks playing together! In an online workshop on Sunday, September 20, 2020, local Irish singer and session organizer Seamus Carmichael shared how a traditional Irish session (musical gathering) works, how to find one near you, and how to politely participate. Anytime! - Rob Kronen in concert

Rob Kronen took top honors at our 2020 Virtual Emerging Artist Showcase. He wowed the judges with his soulful voice, groovin' blues guitar, and songwriting chops. He wowed the watchers too, as the runaway favorite in the showcase audience poll. As one of the first events in our virtual Fall Concert Series, Rob joined us for a live-streamed concert and a conversation with SFMS Board members Peter Winter and Sara Willard Lee on Saturday, September 12, 2020. Anytime - 2020 Emerging Artist Showcase

We are so pleased to congratulate Rob Kronen for scoring hop honors in our 2020 Virtual Emerging Artist Showcase on August 9. Once again, our five finalists were Nashville singer-songwriter Angela Autumn • rockin' contemporary folk band Buffalo Rose • vibrant Irish concertina player Caroline Keane • creative and multi-talented singer Emily Drinker • and Delta blues guitarist Rob Kronen. Our hosts were Sara Willard and Peter Winter.

We'd like to thank all the finalists, as well as all the applicants. Our selection committee and showcase judges had a tough time choosing, which is a wonderful problem to have. We're looking forward to hearing more from all of these emerging artists.

Contemporary singer-songwriter Michael Arthur is noted for his warm emotive vocals and lush acoustic guitar work in open tunings. His performances have been described as “cathartic, heartwarming, and fun all at the same time”. Anytime! - Virtual Folk with Todd Clewell & Barb Schmid

On Thursday, May 28, 2020, we enjoyed toe-tapping roots music from Todd Clewell and Barb Schmid of York County, AKA Strings on Wings. Barb plays fiddle in a variety of styles, including old-time, Celtic and French Canadian. Todd plays guitar, banjo, fiddle and mandolin. Together they produce a tightly woven rhythmic and melodic journey through dance tunes, waltzes and charming duet harmonies.
