Folk duo Pete and Maura Kennedy are recognized for their harmonies and instrumental prowess, blending elements of country music, bluegrass, Western swing and janglepop. Pete and Maura met in Austin, Texas, joined forces with Nanci Griffith's Blue Moon Orchestra for a couple of years, and set out on a road that, for more than two decades, has led them all over the US and the UK many times. In 2015 they celebrated their twentieth anniversary both as a band and a married couple by recording their latest CD West.
"Never, until tonight, would I have thought I'd witness, let alone LIKE, an arrangement [of Gershwyn's Rhapsody in Blue] performed à la rockabilly on ukulele. First I smiled, then I laughed out loud, and as Pete Kennedy's fingers flew and his face split into a grin, I knew I was hearing sheer musical genious rendered with an impish disregard for musical elitism. YAY Pete! — anonymous review
You really have to watch these two perform together, live, to understand the impact of their music. Their onstage chemistry is palpable and their obvious love for music resonates with each chord wrung from their guitars. They are a musical pair very much in tune with one another and their audience. When performing Pete plays the acoustic guitar, electric sitar, bass and ukulele, while Maura plays acoustic and electric guitars and uke. Along with their own compositions, they play songs written by Richard Thompson, The Beatles, Bob Dylan and The Byrds.
They have performed in clubs and theatres throughout the United States, on a cruise, and at Bill Clinton's first and second inaugurations.
