Le Vent du Nord (literally, "wind from the north") has blown us away before, and we're thrilled to have them again! Don't miss it!
"Le Vent has enough virtuosity and spirit to make its four musicians sound like 40 at times, and it tackles Scot, Irish or French material with equal authority. With its offhandedly great musicianship (and where else can you hear a hurdy-gurdy these days?), it's a blast to hear this wind blow." — Kevin R. Convey, Boston Herald

Learn about the mesmerizing and spirited music of Québec — its instruments, influences and history. Le Vent du Nord is dedicated to preserving and sharing the musical heritage of francophone (French-speaking) Canada. All four of the band's musicians come from musical families. They all sing and have mastered such instruments as guitar, mandolin, fiddle, piano, accordion, acoustic bass, hurdy-gurdy and foot-tapping board. During the program they will demonstrate their instruments, answer questions and give the audience a taste of their repertoire.
Some of the songs they perform arrived on American shores with early French settlers, and date back more than 400 years. Their repertoire comes from Québec and Acadia (the name given to certain areas along the northeastern coast of America). Le Vent du Nord is considered one of the foremost guardians of the French Canadian musical tradition.

"...it's a wild ride through the energy of French-Canadian music, with just enough of the quieter side of things to catch your breath and prepare you for the next round of flying fiddle notes, hurdy-gurdy circles, and stories in song." — Kerry Dexter, Dirty Linen

The heart of Québec's traditional music lies in the Lanaudière region, and the Festival Mémoire et Racines brilliantly embodies all its vitality. Festival Mémoires et Racines
As our thoughts turn to warmer weather and summer travel, why not consider planning your vacation around a music festival? One event I can highly recommend is Festival Mémoires et Racines in Joliette, Québec. Joliette is approximately a one hour drive north from Montréal and it is very easy to get to the festival location. The festival is held in beautiful Parc Saint- Jean-Bosco with one of the stages located right along the Assomption River. There is something for everyone including musicians and singers, dancing, a craft boutique, CD store and fabulous food as well as a play area and entertainment for children.
Although Québec is a French speaking region, we did not experience any difficulty with communication. We found that many people spoke English or were willing to decipher our French. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming and the festival staff, in particular, was very helpful. After the festival, you can continue your vacation in Montréal, Québec City or anywhere in the province.
There is great information on the FMC website including lodging info. There is also a link to a video from the 2008 festival. Even though it is narrated in French, you can certainly feel the ambience of the festival. You can also experience the festival through Le Vent du Nord's newest CD, Mesdames et Messieurs!, which was recorded live at the festival last summer. Be sure to check out the festival website at www.memoireracines.qc.ca For additional tourist info you can go to www.lanaudiere.ca or feel free to contact me at megan255 (at) gmail (dot) com
See you there!
