Ysaye Barnwell: Singing in the African American Tradition

The Community Sing on Saturday is funded in part by a grant from the Cultural Enrichment Fund.

Susquehanna Folk is pleased to partner with the Unitarian Church of Harrisburg to present "BUILDING A VOCAL COMMUNITY®: Singing in the African American Tradition" with noted African-American singer and scholar Ysaye Barnwell.

Community Sing: Saturday 10 am - 5 pm

On Saturday, SFMS presents a Community Sing with Dr. Ysaye Barnwell. She is the author/creator of this dynamic program for using music as a means of community-building and has been teaching these workshops for more than 20 years. Her program uses oral tradition, an African world view and African American history, values, cultural and vocal traditions to build communities of song among singers and non-singers alike.

Dr. Barnwell, Ph.D. MSPH, is the founder of the Jubilee Singers at All Souls Unitarian Church in Washington, D.C. and a member of the African American female a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock. A commissioned composer, arranger, author and actress, she is a vocalist with a range of over three octaves and appears on more than 25 recordings with Sweet Honey as well as other artists.
